In use since 1992, the flag of Brazil is made up of several items. The green field represents the House of Braganza of Pedro I, the first emperor of Brazil while the yellow rhombus represents the House of Habsburg of his wife, Empress Maria Leopolina. Each star in the blue circle corresponds to a Brazilian Federative Unit which is sized in proportion relative to its geographic size. Finally, the curved band is inscribed with the national motto "Ordem e Progresso" (Order and Progress)
